ADSL transforms your copper telephone wire into a high speed internet connection.
ADSL works with your existing telephone line and an ADSL modem or router attached to your telephone line. A microfilter (splitter) allows your telephone line to be used for telephone and fax calls while you remain connected to the internet.
ADSL is available in download speeds up to 512kbps, 1024 kbps (1Mb), and 2048kbps (2Mb). The upload speed on all lines is up to 256Kbps. This compares with a maximum of 56Kbps over a standard modem and 64kbps over ISDN.
No, we cannot guarantee the speed of your connection due to several factors. The distance to your local exchange can affect the performance of your ADSL connection as can the contention ratio that you select.
You will still pay your current telecom company for voice and fax calls as you do now. There are no time based charges on ADSL so the internet connection is available to use 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
You will need an ADSL modem or an ADSL modem/router if you want to connect a network to ADSL. You can purchase these via a local retailer, online or from ourselves.
You will also need an ADSL filter (splitter) We suggest that you install one ADSL filter on each telephone and fax that you have.
Once you place your order we will test your telephone line to confirm that it is suitable for ADSL. We will then order the installation from BT. Most lines are ADSL enabled within 5 to 6 working days. In some cases backlogs at the BT exchange can cause installations to take up to 15 working days. We will do our best to keep you informed where we expect the installation to take longer than normal.
ADSL is a complicated service and from time to time the installation can encounter problems. The vast majority of installations take place within 5 or 6 working days but from time to time we do find installations are delayed due to DSLAM capacity shortages at local BT exchanges or due to work backlogs at some busy local exchanges. Once your line is enabled at the exchange it is sometimes possible that the line quality between your modem and the exchange causes poor connections or no connections at all. In these cases we can work with BT to ensure that your line quality is improved to deliver at least the minimum service.
